Spies, cults and mysteries

Friday 9 May 2008, by Jarn Van Hoorn

Here is a sketchy summary of the rumours about these very special societies that seem to be deeply rooted in the Caribbean.

Three of these societies are rather easy to figure out: the Black Cabinet, the Office of Intelligencers, and the Legation of the Republic of United Provinces, which obviously follow the orders and principles of their own government.

The Alumbrados of Salamanca are a special case, although their focus remains upon intelligence: this society is some sort of esoteric brotherhood that has not been created by Spanish agents, but was recently infiltrated by them.

The Santa Alleanza follows the Pope’s policy of course, although separately from the Inquisition; its diplomatic stance shifts with alliances and conflicts, and it is difficult to guess who gains its favours, and who will gain them tomorrow.

The Jacobites in Exile may be able to associate with individuals and organizations that seek the destitution of the English usurper.

The Lodge of the Nine is believed to be inspired by the new Masonic lodges that have appeared in London in 1717, but things may not be what they seem.

The Adepts of Voodoo are the only non-European organization around; however, its membership does not seem to be restricted to slaves. It is possible that this colourful cult has adepts of very different social backgrounds, from commoners to aristocrats. Some even speak of white sorcerers.

As a conclusion, let us not ignore the fact that Portugal, Prussia, Russia and the Ottoman Empire may have send their spies in chosen places. Their efforts do not seem to be very well organized, but who knows...?
